Hispanic Studies Awards
AWARDS CRITERIA AND CONSIDERATIONS
Portuguese
Distinguished Portuguese Student Award
This award goes to the graduating Portuguese student who is the “best all around” in the program. This student has a record of meaningful contributions to the department, campus, and/or language community.
Spanish
Spanish majors who are graduating in May and December of the same academic year will be considered for the awards in Spanish. Awardees are those who have demonstrated exemplary intellectual achievement and, in addition, distinction in some combination of the following: record of service to the department, the School, the entire campus, and/or the community; exemplary performance and leadership; global perspective and/or showing outstanding potential for graduate studies and career success.
Most Accomplished Spanish Major
This award goes to the graduating Spanish major who is the "best all around" in the Department. This student must have a 3.8 minimum GPA in Spanish and a 3.5 minimum GPA. This student has a record of meaningful contributions to the department, campus, and/or language community.
Distinguished Spanish Major
This award goes to the graduating Spanish major with the highest GPA in Spanish and a 3.5 minimum cumulative GPA.
Outstanding Spanish Majors
This award goes to those graduating Spanish majors who have earned a minimum 3.8 GPA in Spanish and have a 3.5 minimum cumulative GPA.
Departmental Honors
This award goes to those graduating Spanish majors or minors who have completed a minimum of 12 hours of exceptionally fine work in a bachelor’s essay (6 hours) plus any combination of 400-level course work, independent study or non-paid internship, and have a 3.5 minimum GPA in Spanish. If no graduating majors or minors in a given year have written a bachelor's essay, this award is bypassed.
Outstanding Spanish Peer Conversation Teacher
This award goes to the graduating senior who has done the most outstanding work serving as a Spanish Peer Conversation Teacher.
Candidate for LCWA Graeser Award
This is often, but not always, the student who won Most Accomplished Spanish Major.
School of Languages, Cultures and World Affairs Awards
Established by the Alumni Association in 1954 in honor of the late Clarence A. Graeser, Professor of Modern Languages at the College of Charleston, this annual award recognizes one outstanding, graduating French, German or Spanish major as chosen by a committee representing the corresponding language departments.
