About the Department
Home to the largest and most comprehensive undergraduate Spanish program in the Southeast, along with a vibrant program in Portuguese, the Department of Hispanic Studies is unique. We have a dynamic, engaged faculty whose expertise spans the spectrum from linguistics and translation to literature and film.
Each year, nearly 5,000 students populate our Spanish courses, with approximately 100 majors and 300 minors.
Our department also houses the College’s programs in Latin American and Caribbean Studies and Linguistics, and our faculty support numerous interdisciplinary programs, including International Studies, Women's and Gender Studies, the Master of Education in Languages, and the Honors College.
We also offer a wide variety of study abroad opportunities, we sponsor La Casa Hispana (Spanish House) residence for qualifying students of Spanish, and we afford numerous extracurricular activities that include the Portuguese and Spanish clubs, the National Collegiate Hispanic Honor Society, the Portuguese Honor Society, the Hispanic Latino Club, Portuguese and Spanish conversation tables and other opportunities. Since July 1, 2010, our department is also proud to be the national headquarters of Sigma Delta Pi, the National Collegiate Hispanic Honor Society, which with over 610 chapters nationwide is the largest foreign language honor society for 4-year colleges in the U.S.
